John Goemaat joined the firm in July of 2001 after serving as labor and employment counsel for 24 years with Western Electric, AT&T and, most recently, Lucent Technologies.
John’s tenure in the corporate sector has given him extensive experience with labor and employment issues facing American corporations today. He has provided advice and counsel to corporate staff and management on labor relations, employment law (including merger, acquisition and disposition issues), unlawful discrimination, affirmative action, employee benefits and immigration. Over the years, he has handled hundreds of cases in just about every aspect of the law as it applies to employment. He has conducted numerous internal investigations of discrimination and harassment allegations. He also has considerable experience negotiating private settlements and drafting and negotiating management and executive separations.
John has represented his corporation before federal and state courts, administrative agencies (including Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the National Labor Relations Board), arbitrators and mediators. He has also supervised outside litigation counsel.
While in-house, John was a frequent participant in employee educational conferences on such matters as Equal Opportunity, affirmative action, diversity, and sexual harassment. He also has given intensive instruction to EO specialists.
Prior to becoming an in-house attorney, John was a lawyer at the Office of the General Counsel at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in Washington, D.C.
