William R. Watkins
William R. Watkins is a retired Shareholder at Lindabury, McCormick, Estabrook & Cooper, P.C.
Bill Watkins spent his entire legal career at the Lindabury law firm and served as the firm’s Treasurer and Chief Operating Officer. His practice concentrated on representing clients in business transactions and commercial contracts; health care law; the representation of professionals and professional groups; and in public utility and energy law.
Bill was adept at handling a wide array of commercial transactions and contract matters for businesses and individuals, including the organization, purchase and/or sale of businesses, joint venture agreements, contracts for the sale of goods or provision of services, employment contracts and executive compensation issues, benefits and severance agreements, independent contractor agreements and agreements for the purchase/sale or leasing of both real and personal property. Bill developed a niche practice representing professionals (including attorneys, accountants and physicians) in connection with issues arising when they join or leave a professional practice group, including counsel with respect to non-compete and non-solicitation obligations and other restrictive covenants.
Bill spent much of his career handling a variety of regulatory and other matters in the health care field on behalf of hospitals, physicians, dentists, therapists and other providers. His work included the representation of clients in the purchase, sale, expansion or consolidation of professional practices; significant experience in negotiating and drafting employment agreements and other contracts; drafting joint venture and independent contractor agreements; undertaking Stark and fraud and abuse analyses; counseling tax exempt entities; and involvement with HIPAA compliance and other privacy issues, and other regulatory matters.
Bill developed extensive experience spanning several decades handling a myriad of natural gas and electric matters for some of the largest end-users in the State, representing the interests of individual users in a multitude of energy-related projects, transactions, and complaint proceedings, as well as representing groups of customers as intervenors in major utility rate proceedings before the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, the Office of Administrative Law and other bodies.
In addition to actively representing a diverse group of clients, Bill assumed a lead role in the law firm’s operations and management for more than two decades. He devoted a substantial portion of his working time serving in the capacity of the firm’s Chief Operating Officer and as an ex-officio member of the firm’s Executive Committee. This in-house management function greatly enhanced his understanding and experience with respect to a wide array of issues facing mid-size businesses, particularly including professional practices, and his ability to provide clients with effective guidance, problem-solving advice and counsel.
Bill served for many years on the Advisory Board for Legus, a network of approximately 80 domestic and international law firms, of which Lindabury is a member, and he was named to serve as the Chair of that organization from 2015 to 2017.
